The Palaces of the Vaud

Quite close to Montreux, on a small island by the lakeshore, stands the Chateau de Chillon, the most famous monument in all of western Switzerland. Building of the chateau had began before the 11th century. Its first owners were bishops of the Sion, then beginning from the middle of the 12th century it belonged to Savoyards, in centuries  16-18th to Bernois, and finally since the end of the 18th century it is the property of Vaud. Bonivard was held prisoner in its cells. Famous poem by Byron was dedicated to this place.

The Chateau D’Aigle stands in the midst of a region of steep-sloped vineyards. It was built in the 12th century as a fortress by the bishop of Lausanne. Then the chateau was owned by Savoyards, and in the 15th century made the property of Bern. Now it represents three museums: the museum of Grapes, the museum of wines and the museum of wine labels.

The Chateau de Morges, a 13th -century structure erected by the Savoyard dukes, was besieged by the Bernois in 1475 after conquest of lands of Vaud. It was later rebuilt and made the seat of the governors of Berne. Today it houses three museums: the military museum, the museum of fine arts and the museum of artillery.
