The Canton of the Vaud
Lausanne is principal town of the Canton of Vaud. It is a charming city brimming with artistic and cultural vivacity. It is equally active in commerce and industry.
The university and town hall are two of the major focal points of this city which always seems to be thronged with people. The old town offers innumerable architectural points of interest; it is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of Notre-Dame.
Ouchy is the precinct of Lausanne that lies directly on Lake Geneva, with its shoreline adorned with parks and gardens. This is the port of call for the large steamers that ply the vast lake connecting the towns and cities along its shore.
The splendid Lavaux coastline between Lausanne and Vevey is marked by innumerable vineyards. The region produces some of the most renowned of Swiss wines, particularly the whites of Dezaley, St.-Saphorin, Epesses, all known for their fragrant, delicate bouquet. Grape harvest season is a special time here which blends with the rich autumnal colours to help create the unique atmosphere of the coast of Lavaux. St.-Saphorin is one of the delightful villages perched on the bank overlooking the Lake of Geneva, where everything seems to serve as a reminder of its celebrated wine. Vevey, in addition to being a leading holiday resort, is also a large industrial centre. Every twenty-five years, Vevey plays host to a large, spectacular festival in celebration of wine.
Montreux enjoys a renown and tradition that are almost unique among European resorts. A cosmopolitan town, it is booked almost to capacity all year round by visitors from every corner of the world. Glion, situated above Montreux, offers spectacular views of the whole panorama of the Savoy Alps. A cog wheel train takes the visitor from Montreux to Caux, with its splendid terrace on the lake of Geneva. Continuing onwards by the same cogwheel train, we climb all the way to Rochers-de-Naye, at 2,042 meters altitude. It commands a 360-degree vista over all of Lake of Geneva, the Savoy Alps, the Valaisian Alps, Bernese Alps and the Jura. Here finds itself Aigle.
