Palaces of Geneva
The 18th century Chateau de Coppet owes its fame to the fact that it once housed the residence and the intellectual salon of Madame de Stael, the patroness of artists and men of letters. The constructing of the chateau began in the 13th century in times of Pierre of Savoy. After his death his successors, the Villars continued building. The chateau was being rebuilt several times and at last in the 17-18th centuries assumed its nowadays appearance. The chateau made famous all over the world in the 18th century, when its owner became Jacques Necker. After his death the chateau belonged to his issues, one of which was Madame de Stael.
Nowadays Neckers still remain the chateaus owners. Le Chateau de Coppet is the only private castle in area of the Lake of Geneva. The chateau is not treated like a museum, so it is open for wide audience. The Chateau de Rolle, triangular in floor-plan, is a waterfront fortification erected by the Savoyards in the 13th century.
